THE CASE FOR GM6
The name GM6 is actually an abbreviation of the military phrase “Got My 6.” Got My 6 is a simple check to be sure each soldier has someone watching his blind spot (represented as the 6 o’clock position on a clock) while in a dangerous area. In other words, it is best understood as a call to be sure each soldier avoids a venture into the combat zone alone and unprotected.
Biblically, historically, and traditionally, men have gotten into trouble—deadly trouble—when they find themselves alone. The self-made man is a myth. It is imperative that men join other men to strengthen, encourage, and guide each other in a tight circle of Godly influence.
As Christian men, the life of Jesus is a great model for us. Jesus had His circle of influence—The Twelve Disciples, but He also had His inner circle—Peter, James, and John. When the going got tough, Jesus called on these three to pray with Him in the Garden. One even took out his sword to defend Him. (Mark 14; John 18)
Christ’s example alone should spur us on. He revealed His true nature on the mountain (Transparency). Jesus spent many intimate moments and asked the disciples to keep His identity quiet until His time came (Confidentiality). And of course, He chose to die for us (Commitment). Jesus Christ is our example of manhood and He exemplified GM6 in His life and ministry. (Matthew 16; Mark 8-9; Hebrews 12)
In October 2009, at a Men’s Retreat, the question was asked, ”What would Houston’s First look like if men were committed, sold-out to Christ…challenging, encouraging, and holding other men accountable?”
The answer is simple, “We would look different. We would look more like Jesus Christ. We would never be the same.”
