Missions
Houston’s First Baptist Church has an amazing legacy of missions involvement. We are attempting to carry on that legacy through Student Missions. We believe that few things stir the heart of a teenager like missions. Our desire is to provide mission opportunities that allow our students to grow and develop in ministry skills and a heart for missions.
The foundation of our mission program is Rush Week for 7th-12th graders. The bookends of Rush Week are a prep experience for 6th graders called 6th Grade One-Day projects and international opportunities for mostly Juniors and Seniors who have developed in their skill.
RUSH WEEK
Jul 21-28, 2012 – Ozark Mountains
Rush Week is a unique missions experience combining the service and ministry of a mission trip with the fun and exciting atmosphere of camp. Students are divided into tracks according to grade and missions experience.

AsWeGo WEEKEND
(formerly the Student Missions Conference)
Jan 13-14, 2012
A 24 Hour Missions Experience from 7p-7p. AsWeGo is a weekend designed similar to a DiscipleNow Retreat in which students spend Friday night in homes (high school) or at the church (middle school). All other activities take place at Houston's First or in the community. The purpose of the weekend is to better equip students in responding to the world’s need in a Christian manner. It is built upon this principle:
As Christians
We Help People
Go to Heaven
This year’s theme is “The Persecuted Church.” We’ll be talking to and learning about the faithful Christians who stand each day on the front lines of persecution around the world.
The conference is open to students from any church.

V43
Vision for Three is a campus outreach strategy that prepares and challenges our students to be involved in the lives of unchurched friends. The desired result is that God would use our students to minister to a lost and needy world. Currently 143 students have committed to Pray, Serve and Invite through V43. The Student Ministry has partnered with the Senior Adult ministry to provide Adult Prayer Mentors for each of these 143 students. Here’s how V43 works:
- Prayer – Students pray for the work of God in the lives of their friends. They ask God to give them and others opportunities to speak Truth to them.
- Service – Students look for opportunities to serve their friends. This can be as simple as helping them with a class at school or encouraging them through a difficult time.
- Invitation – Students commit to invite their friends to hear the Gospel – either through their own words and/or by bringing them to events such as Wired and Amp.
How can parents, friends and other church members get involved?
- Pray for our students. If you desire, contact Susan Newman in the Student Ministry Office and we will connect you with a specific student that you can pray for in their journey.
- Provide a scholarship for students to attend Rush Week. Rush Week is our summer Missions/Camp experience where students are trained to be V43 campus missionaries.
- As you see a student around church, ask them if they are involved in V43. If so, encourage them and tell them you appreciate the ministry they are doing!
6TH GRADE ONE-DAY PROJECTS
A great opportunity for 6th graders to
begin the journey of missions, one-day projects allow the student to taste and
experience missions in a very safe and controlled environment. Each day will
include a time of training, service and debriefing. Projects are on Mondays throughout
the summer. Check back in the spring for specific dates and costs for one-day
projects in 2012.
CONTACT Zac Hufty, Middle School Minister, to sign up or get more information about One-Day Projects.
INTERNATIONAL MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
Taking the Gospel across borders and cultures is a great way for students to experience missions. High School students with prior missions experience (Rush Week) are eligible to apply for most International Mission opportunities. This past year students participated in trips to Ecuador, Israel, Cambodia and Chile.
Canada Mission Trip
Jun 22-28, 2012 – Saskatoon, Canada
Led by Next Worldwide Ministries, this trip will be made up of students and adult leaders primarily from Houston's First.
