As you've heard on the news, the horrific tornado that struck Moore, OK, on May 20 was the third such storm to impact the area in 14 years — with each storm following a similar path.
On May 3, 1999, a twister came through Moore and continued to Del City, another town about 10 miles to the north. It was there that the storm hit the home of Rev. Jake and Galelia Self — the parents of our Executive Pastor David Self. Unfortunately, Rev. Self did not survive the damage to their home.
David shares that the officer who pulled his mother from the rubble of their home that day continued to visit her on the anniversary of the storm — May 3 — every year until she passed away in 2008.
Now, as the people of Moore and the surrounding community once again face the aftermath of another tornado, Houston's First is collecting financial donations in memory of Jake Self. All donations given will go directly to the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief program of the North American Mission Board.
There are three ways to contribute:
Continue to pray for Oklahoma and those impacted by this most recent storm. May they know God's comfort and healing in a mighty way. And, pray for the first responders and relief workers who are there on the scene. May God give them endurance, and may He use them to minister to those in need.
