Help for Syrian Refugees

Oct 02, 2013

When Houston's First observes the Lord's Supper at each of our campuses on Sun, Oct 6, we'll collect a special offering for a designated ministry. It's something we do every time we remember Christ's sacrifice for us — we sacrifice our resources for the benefit of others.

This time, we'll give 100% of the special offering to Health Outreach to the Middle East (H.O.M.E.) to support the work they're doing with refugees from the ongoing conflict in Syria. This offering is above and beyond our weekly tithes, and is not considered part of your MISSION 1:8 pledge.

To contribute to this special offering, you can:

  • Place cash or check (made to Houston's First Baptist Church) in the special offering containers as you exit the worship services on Sun, Oct 6
  • Give online now:

Read below for a look at how God is using H.O.M.E. among these millions of men, women, and children in need.

H.O.M.E. For People Without a Home

Syria has been making headlines in the news recently. According to the United Nations refugee agency, more than 6 million Syrians have fled their country to neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.

Every 14 seconds, another Syrian is displaced across national boundaries and around 5,000 people per day are fleeing the three-year conflict which the U.N. says has already claimed over 150,000 lives. With nowhere to go and often with just the clothes on their backs, many end up in refugee camps that are both overcrowded and overwhelmed.

Health Outreach to the Middle East (H.O.M.E.) is working overtime to meet the needs both physically and spiritually from the influx of Syrian refugees flooding H.O.M.E.’s stationed clinics, mobile clinics and hospitals residing in surrounding countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

Houston's First is stepping up to help H.O.M.E. as they work to meet the needs of these refugees.

We're excited to see how our church family will respond as we collect a special offering to assist H.O.M.E. and the vital work they are doing in the Middle East.

Beyond financial assistance, Houston’s First has been sending medical mission teams with H.O.M.E. to the Middle East since 2010. In the summer of 2013, our church sent a medical missions team with H.O.M.E. to Lebanon to serve the over 1 million Syrian refugees who are now residing in Lebanon.

Currently, H.O.M.E. is offering supplies, medical care and often times temporary shelter especially for the Syrian people displaced by the crisis through its stationed and mobile clinics in surrounding countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

For the 4.25 million people who are displaced inside Syria, H.O.M.E. is still operating its stationed clinic in Syria, meeting the war-based healthcare demands of its citizens and providing healing both physically and spiritually amongst the angst and fighting that continues to carry on.

You can help.

H.O.M.E. is launching a major relief and community health outreach campaign through its extensive network of Christian mobile and field clinics in Syria and its surrounding Arabic-speaking countries. Every donation of $50 to H.O.M.E. can help treat one new Syrian patient/refugee (this includes medical examinations/tests, food/hygiene kits and medications). For a gift of $500, you can support as many as two Syrian families with the medical examinations/tests, food/hygiene kits and medications needed during this difficult time.

While the difficulties in the Middle East never seem to fade, through our Great Physician, we know we can reach the suffering and share the Cure through medicine and the life-giving love of God no matter the crisis.

About H.O.M.E.

Health Outreach to the Middle East (H.O.M.E.) is a Christian, interdenominational organization that exists to bring physical, psychological and spiritual healing to the poor and suffering people in the Middle East through God’s love.

H.O.M.E. is one of the few Christian-based organizations that has trusted access to these severely war-torn countries because its leadership are well-known Christian, Middle-Eastern Americans who are dual citizens of the land, fluent in Arabic and closely related to and familiar with the Arabic culture.
