Pastor Juan Jesus Alaniz was born in Weslaco, Texas. As a migrant family, the Alanizes followed the crop-picking seasons through several states each year. In 1972, they settled in Riverbank in the Central Valley of California. A love for basketball carried Juan through high school and college. His coaching career started while finishing his Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology. He began counseling at DeAnza Community College while coaching boys’ varsity high school basketball.
Three high schools and 20 years later, Juan received the call from the Lord in 2006 to pastor the first Spanish-speaking service at Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto. In September 2013, he was called to open another Spanish-speaking service at Calvary Baptist Church in Turlock. Now, he has accepted the call to join us at Houston's First to begin our new Spanish Campus.
Josie, Juan’s wife, is an Instructional Coach for intermediate and high school teachers at Turlock School District and a professor at California State University, Stanislaus. Their daughter Quimi is a Student Ministry Worship Leader here at Houston’s First, and their daughter Sami serves as worship leader for the youth at Big Valley Grace Community Church while attending college. The family has extensive experience in discipleship, missions, leadership, music and message.
“We are looking forward to working alongside the incredible staff and family in Christ at Houston’s First,” says Juan. “Quimi has been so blessed to be loved as she has been here and we appreciate it so much. Now, we want to grow in our salvation (1 Peter 2:1-3) and in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus (2 Peter 3:18) through the great word of God taught at Houston’s First by Pastor Gregg and others.”
