Participation in counseling is part of Christian discipleship, what Eugene Peterson describes as “a long obedience in the same direction.” Joy recognizes the privileged role she has in journeying with others as they seek hope and renewal in relationship through counseling. She believes that counseling pursues the work of reconciliation, which is the work of Christ among humanity. Joy accompanies clients as they reconcile with past and present selves as well as with others. In this courageous and arduous work, Joy is passionate in helping clients find life in and live life as their true selves.
With this framework in mind, Joy utilizes several different counseling modalities and interventions to meet client needs. She draws from Restoration Therapy, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and Attachment Theory. Beyond the skills and tools Joy shares with clients, she prioritizes creating a safe space in counseling where clients are allowed to struggle, to question, to grieve, and to not be rushed.
