Neil Armstrong took a step to get out of bed the morning before the lunar landing that set the course for the iconic “one small step” he took onto the moon’s surface. That step made a far-reaching, unparalleled impact now almost 48 years later.
When you “step up” to serve as a volunteer at Houston’s First, God can use you to point others to Jesus to change the course of their lives for all eternity. And, with thousands of people gathering at the five campuses of Houston’s First every Sunday, there are countless opportunities to serve.
These 10 teams below provide essential elements of a typical Sunday at our church. Roles and opportunities may vary from campus to campus, and there might be other teams unique to your campus, too. The point is, there is always a place for you to give life away.
So, whether it seems like a small step or a giant leap, find where you can help make Sunday happen at Houston’s First!
Unaware of your spiritual gifts, heart passions or personality traits? Take a confidential online spiritual gifts assessment free of charge courtesy of Houston’s First! While not required to volunteer, the assessment can assist you in determining where to serve with your spiritual gifts.
The first step to serving as a volunteer is to let someone know you’re interested! Fill out the “Step Up To Serve” interest form and the respective team leaders will contact you about taking the next step!
While facilitating designated parking areas at their campuses, Parking Team volunteers are often the first ones to welcome people as they arrive at Houston’s First, answer their initial questions, and point them in the right direction as they make their way into the building.
Formerly known as the Welcome Team, the Guest Experience (GX) Team ensures people feel at home on Sundays “from the streets to the seats” — greeting them at the doors, helping them find Life Bible Studies, handing out Weekly Guides, ushering in the worship services, and answering any questions that come their way.
CornerBooks’ mission is to extend the message, ministry and mission of Houston’s First, and volunteers make that happen by equipping people with helpful resources and providing hospitality in the form of warm smiles and hot coffee.
Our church is intentional about sharing God’s love—even with our smallest ones! Rocking babies is one role where volunteers begin laying a foundation for God’s love and truth upon which infants through Kindergarteners will grow for years to come.
Sundays in FirstKids Children’s Ministry are a blast for 1st–5th graders—and for volunteers, too! Kids’ Worship and Life Bible Studies lead kids to actively dive into the Bible and present the Gospel in a way that guides children to accept Jesus as their Savior.
Middle school and high school are defining seasons in students’ lives. Volunteers in The HUB Student Ministry partner with parents and staff to provide students in 6th–12th grades with opportunities to explore and apply God’s Word to their lives—often developing mentoring relationships along the way.
Volunteers in the Thru the Roof Special Needs Ministry offer a loving place for children and adults with special needs to be the people God uniquely created them to be. In addition, volunteers provide their families peace of mind while attending a worship service or Life Bible Study, knowing that their loved ones are being well-cared for.
Serving college students through our most senior adults, volunteers in Adult Life Bible Studies are vital to this essential ministry. Guests and members at every campus can explore God’s Word, develop community with others and grow stronger in their faith in a smaller, more intimate setting.
Corporate worship on Sundays at Houston’s First provides opportunities to volunteer as a member of the Choir (9:15a) or Singers (11a) at The Loop Campus, allowing those with a passion for worshipping through music to serve while doing what they love—and auditions are not required.
Each Sunday at our campuses, Connection Center volunteers are available to answer questions about the Christian faith, guide people through the church membership process and pray with those feeling led to receive Jesus’ gift of eternal life.
