A Worthy Easter Project

Apr 14, 2020

Even though they couldn’t physically unite in song on Easter Sunday, worship leaders at Houston’s First still made a joyful noise unto the Lord together.

The worship ministry’s vision for Easter was to exalt our risen Savior and lead our church family and guests in authentic worship through music as we gather online instead of in-person due to the coronavirus outbreak. They decided that a virtual worship moment during the service would be a way to accomplish that vision.

“We realized that it could be possible and could really be a powerful moment of worship and communication to our church family as a whole,” shares Josh Harris, worship associate at Houston’s First.

The worship ministry provided instructions on how to be a part of the virtual Easter choir’s video recording of “Is He Worthy?” by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive. They had 120 video submissions for this collaborative project coordinated and assembled by staff members from the church’s Worship and Production teams.

“We have had members from the Choir, Orchestra, Bands, Singers, Elevate Student Worship, plus worship leaders and frontline singers from each of the campuses submit videos,” Harris explains. “It truly has been a project that has utilized and united all of our worship teams!”

Beyond this Easter endeavor, Harris explains how the Choir and Orchestra continues to stay connected as they practice social distancing.

“We’ve gathered every week for a mid-week time of worship on Facebook Live. Worship Associate Eric Belvin and his wife, Danielle, have led us in great songs of worship that minister to our people directly,” Harris shares. “We’ve connected with each of our members, and I’m hearing a lot about how many of them are having to dive into this world of technology. Others still struggle with it, as you can imagine, and we work at keeping them connected, walking through how to access things and connect with others during this time of isolation”

Even with their continued connection to each other, those involved in the virtual choir realized the importance of that moment during this year’s unique Easter Sunday — for themselves and for our church.

“The Choir and Orchestra, Bands and Singers, and the worship teams across the campuses are an incredible group of people who serve the church body every week, and suddenly they are unable to do that in the way that they are used to,” Harris explains. “This project gave them a place to do that and to be a part of a group of people serving together. It also communicates an incredible message to our church body. Yes, the lyrics of the song and the message behind it, but also a message that says ‘There is nothing that will stop us from worshiping and celebrating our risen Savior!’”
