"How Can I Help?"

Apr 17, 2020

I was made for more than watching.
I have a history-changing, difference-making, life-giving, Spirit-empowered legacy to leave.
Jesus, I ask You to work deeply in me and clearly through me as I pray, give and go in Your love.
I am a Difference Maker.
In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, our members have stepped up in countless ways to serve and bless their community. The beautiful part? Most of are taking action on their own — finding ways to help neighbors or encourage others in some way. If you're looking for ways to make a difference, here are some suggestions to consider:

Frontline Prayer Partners

Houston's First is mobilizing prayer coverage for our frontline medical professionals and first responders. We have identified around 200+ such frontline workers in our church. We want to offer them intentional prayer partners during this time.

Be A Prayer Partner

We're looking for more than 50 prayer partners to pray every day for up to five frontline workers who are assigned to you. These frontline workers need daily coverage for the environment they will work in for the coming months.

  • You will be given your assigned workers'' preferred form of contact (email or phone).
  • Based on local projections, we ask that each prayer partner commit to praying for their assigned workers for a minimum of eight weeks.

Mask Makers

You can serve our community from home by sewing fabric face masks. These masks are not medical-grade and are not intended to be used alone in a hospital environment. Face masks are recommended by the CDC to help prevent spread of infection, but should not replace frequent hand washing and social distancing.

These masks will be distributed to at-risk populations who request them and to healthcare workers to help extend the life of their medical-grade masks. The need for these masks continues to grow and you can help by using one of the patterns provided below.

Materials

Masks require the following materials:

  • tight-weave 100% cotton fabric
  • thread
  • ¼” or ⅜” elastic or twill for ties
  • 20 or 22 gauge wire (options include floral wire or pipe cleaners)

Patterns

Recommended patterns:

  • Pattern A — pleated pattern that uses fabric to make ties since elastic and twill tape are in short supply
  • Pattern B — simple curved pattern; you will need to add seam allowance; size M fits most
  • Pattern C — pattern features a pocket for a filter (do not include any filter material in masks you donate)

Here are some other options with video; you can click for printable instructions:

  • Video 1 — basic pleated mask
  • Video 2 — pleated mask using up-cycled T-shirts for ties
  • Video 3 — curved mask with pocket for filter

Delivery

Once you have completed 20 or more masks:

  • Wash masks in hot water and dry on high heat
  • Place masks in a large zip-top bag or paper sack
  • Write the quantity on the outside of the bag/sack
  • Arrange for the pick-up of your masks using the link below

Prayer for Delivery Personnel

Even with "contact free" deliveries, you can still connect with the people bringing your groceries, dinner, or online purchases. We've created a tool to let them know our church wants to pray for them. Download and print the color or black-and-white version, cut along the dotted lines, and attached it to your front door. Then, pray that God will use it to impact other right there on your doorstep!

The Cypress Campus is still collecting food to benefit Cy-Fair Helping Hands. Donations can be dropped off right inside the front doors of the Cypress Campus on Tuesdays, June 2–30 from 8:30a-4:30p. Only bring non perishable donations will be accepted.
