Who's Making a Difference

In 2016, Houston's First Baptist Church is celebrating 175 years of being a differencemaker for God's kingdom and the message of Jesus Christ.

Our church and our city have grown and changed greatly since 1841 — just five years after the battle at the Alamo. But throughout the generations, there have been people in our church and groups in our city who are making a difference.

Now, as we celebrate our demisemiseptcentennial (or, our 175th anniversary), we want to celebrate 175 differencemakers in our church and our city — and we're asking our Life Bible Studies to identify who those differencemakers are!

As a Life Bible Study leader, you are asked to submit the name of:

  1. a person/couple in your class making a difference outside the walls of our church
  2. an organization making a difference in our city

Read below to learn more about each request, and use the links provided to submit the names using our online forms. Thank you in advance for helping us recognize people and groups who are making a difference!

People In Our Church

Tell us about an individual or couple in your Life Bible Study who is:

  • making an impact outside the walls of Houston's First
  • standing up and stepping out
  • an "unsung hero" of daily life

What might that look like? Some examples of the many ways people in our church can be differencemakers in our community include (but are not limited to):

  • leading a Bible study at work
  • caring for a neighbor in need
  • mentoring kids in area schools

Once we receive the name you submit, we'll contact that person/couple about getting their photo and sharing their story with the rest of the church.

We look forward to hearing about the differencemakers among our church family!

Groups In Our City

Tell us the local organization making a difference in our city whom your Life Bible Study would like to bless with a $1,000 gift from Houston's First Baptist Church. The organization should be dedicated to serving the people of Houston and be one of the following:

  • an established non-profit organization (i.e., 501(c)(3) status)
  • a government services organization (e.g., fire or police departments)
  • a public school or a student organization at a public school

What organizations might qualify? Some examples of the many groups serving our city include (but are not limited to):

  • fire stations
  • Christian Student Union chapters at local high schools
  • veterans groups
  • homeless support organizations

A partial list of possible recipients is provided here, including fire stations and schools near our campuses. You can choose from this list, or submit an organization on your own.
