Amazing Transformation

Apr 23, 2015

Parenting a well-adjusted child seems to be more challenging with each passing decade. Many of the issues children and teens face today look vastly different than those of our parents’ generation. What do we do when we encounter issues in raising families today for which parents could never have thought to prepare us? For every problem we encounter, however, the Lord raises up wise counselors to give us tools for living lives of freedom, without condemnation or regret.

Doug Bischoff, minister of Next Generation Ministries (Birth-12th Grade) at Houston’s First, found gold nuggets of wisdom can be mined even by a teenage sibling who will take the time to listen and implement what he has learned. Doug shared a personal story about his own sons, ages 15 and 12, in which the eldest popped in to sit with Dad during a teacher training event for leaders at Houston’s First.

The event featured a class taught by Ricky Chelette, executive director of Living Hope Ministries, on “Understanding Gender Confusion in Males.” While neither child has any confusion issues pertaining to gender, the boys do tend to approach life from different points of view. The 15-year-old heard Chelette describe males as having two basic — and vastly different — personality types: ‘Rough & Tumble’ and ‘Sensitive.’

Something in his brain clicked. He suddenly understood some of the differences between himself and his younger brother and began to make adjustments in the way he interacted with him.

“There’s been an amazing transformation in their relationship,” said Doug. Where the younger son had been somewhat reluctant to get involved in extracurricular activities, his newfound sense of self-worth has given him the courage to step out and try new things.

“My older son began to see what an influence he had on his younger brother,” said Doug. “Now he is thriving.”

Ricky Chelette returns to The Loop Campus of Houston's First to present “Understanding Gender Confusion in Males” on Wed, May 6, 2015 and “Understanding Gender Confusion in Females” on Wed, May 13, 2015. The free classes give parents a look at the development of identity and how to form healthy relationships from a biblical perspective.
