HOUS ON FIRST?

Oct 27, 2017

Welcome, baseball fans!

Did you see our sign in right field at Minute Maid Park? Well, if you're a local baseball fan, Pastor Gregg Matte and the Houston's First Baptist Church family invite you to visit one of our five campuses in the greater Houston area — The Loop, Cypress, Downtown, Español, or Sienna.

If you're from out of town and were just curious about our church — well, you're welcome, too! Stop by the next time you're in H-Town, or gather with us online each Sunday live from The Loop Campus at 9:15a, 11a or 5p (Central) here at HoustonsFirst.org or on Facebook.com/HoustonsFirst.

More Than A Sign

Houston's First is honored to be a sponsor of the American League Champion Houston Astros. It has been a great season, and church members have loved seeing their church's name out in right field at Minute Maid Park — especially when it gets in the way of an outfielder on the opposing team!

Beyond the visible sign, Houston's First has been involved with the Houston Astros in other ways this season. Campus Pastor Juan Alaniz from our Español Campus serves as a chaplain to Spanish-speaking players while Josie, his wife, serves as a chaplain to wives of English- and Spanish-speaking players and coaches.

At the start of the season leading up to Opening Day, we altered our sign at The Loop Campus to convert HOUSTON'S FIRST to read HOUS ON FIRST? — a reference to the famous Abbott & Costello "Who's On First?" comedy routine. The Astros' mascot — Orbit — even stopped by to see our public support for the team facing traffic on I-10.

Astros fans also hear from Pastor Gregg Matte and Campus Pastor Juan Alaniz when they tune in to radio broadcasts of home games at Minute Maid Park, and they find us in the Game Day Magazine sold at the stadium, as well. In the past, Pastor Gregg has thrown out the first pitch at Astros games, the church has hosted "Houston's First Baptist Church Nights" at Minute Maid Park, and our Singers have led the National Anthem.

The Astros are not the only hometown team Houston's First has supported in some way. Pastor Gregg led a chapel service for the Houston Texans last year, and Campus Pastor Malcolm Marshall from our Sienna Campus currently serves as a chaplain for the Houston Rockets. Last season, our Singers led the National Anthem at a Rockets game and in previous years we advertised with the Houston Texans and the Houston Dynamo.
