Gene is a licensed minister and offers pastoral counseling from a biblical perspective, drawing from Christianity’s rich soul care tradition. He enjoys helping clients form a Christian perspective on their challenges. Gene has served as a church pianist, a youth minister, a group facilitator, a seminary counselor, and most recently served for two years as a biblical counselor at Bridgehaven Counseling Associates in Durham, NC.
Gene earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) in Christian Ministry from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also holds a Master of Theology (ThM) in Missions and Evangelism and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pastoral Theology (Biblical Counseling in Pastoral Contexts) from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Gene works with individuals (male and female, age 11 or older), couples, and families. Gene enjoys counseling and researching issues related to same-sex attraction, gender incongruence, and LGBTQ+ identification from the perspective of historic Christianity. Other interests include depression, anxiety, emotion regulation, assurance of salvation,
sexual addiction, pornography, doubts about Christianity, and Christian spiritual practices. He is a Certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator and a Certified SYMBIS Assessment Facilitator. He has also completed Level 1 trainings in Theraplay and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. In addition to Scripture and theology, his counseling is influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and family systems theory. Gene is also a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and the Society for Christian Psychology.
