LPC-Associate Internship

Part of the vision here at the Julianna Poor Memorial Counseling Center is to invest in the future of Christian Counseling. A way to fulfill this vision is through counseling associate internships. As a LPC-Associate you will go through training as you integrate into the counseling center. Our internship is designed for those who feel a call to do professional counseling from a biblical foundation in a Christian ministry. We provide supervision, trainings, and additional resources during your time here. The following is a brief overview of what to expect.

Since our program is for those who are LPC-Associates with the state of Texas, there are some practical steps that have to be followed. As the LPC board rules state, to acquire hours towards your internship you have to have completed your practicum and passed your NCE. We will need a copy of your temporary license if you are accepted. We have an application that you can download and return to us. Your application will be looked at by our leadership team in the counseling center. The availability of LPC-Associate Internships is based upon open positions. We will contact you and set up an interview if we have positions available, or we will let you know if we do not have any positions available. At this interview, we will discuss your vision for why you want to work in the church or in a Christian environment.

In the beginning of your LPC-Associate Internship, you will do co-therapy until we are able to discern your level of competency as a therapist. You may also be a co-leader of a therapy group depending on your interests and the groups we are running at the time. Once we feel comfortable with your skill level, you will begin doing individual counseling. You will also have weekly supervisor meetings with your supervisor. We currently have four supervisors.

If this program sounds like something you would like to be a part of, then fill it out the LPC-Associate Internship Application below, and send it back in to us. We look forward to be a part of what God is doing through His people and in encouraging the callings He has placed on each of us.

Practicum

The Julianna Poor Memorial Counseling Center is an approved practicum site for several of the universities in the Houston area. We currently have four board-approved supervisors on staff here. Our practicum spots are reserved for those who feel a calling to use their professional training in a Christian ministry environment. During your practicum here, you will have the opportunity to see multiple facets of a counseling center. Your time will include some administrative experience, possible research, role-play, exposure to different modalities of counseling, co-therapy, group therapy, individual therapy and supervision. You will also take part in the Soul Care class that is designed to encourage deeper relationships and build spiritual community.

Phase I

  • Student addresses their own issues in therapy and observe individual, couple, family, play, and group therapy.

Phase II

  • Student participates in co-facilitation of therapy and support groups.

Phase III

  • Student begins taking on individual cases.

There is not a set amount of time for each of these phases. If you are interested in applying for a practicum, fill out the Practicum Application and send it back to us. Spots available are dependent on open positions. If there is an open position, we will contact you and set up and interview.
