Frequently Asked Questions

Preschool–Kindergarten

We hope that this resource will help connect you to First Friends Preschool & Kindergarten Ministry and all we have to offer from Sunday Life Bible Studies to our annual events to weekday programming, and even to the lingo you’ll need to know to navigate all things First Friends.

Where are the First Friends Staff Offices?

2nd Floor, Education Suite 217

How can I get involved as a parent?

One of the best and easiest ways to get involved as a parent is to volunteer with us on Sundays or on Wednesday evenings. We have several opportunities including Heartland leaders & helpers, Life Bible Study teachers, Heart2Heart volunteers, Preschool Desk or Door volunteers, and Mission Friends teachers. All volunteers must clear a background check and be members of Houston’s First. For more information—and to access required forms—please visit our Media & Resources page. To see all volunteer opportunities, please browse our Volunteers page.

What is the process for dropping my child off in the First Friends area?

All First time visitors will report to the First Friends Desk for class assignments. Once the child is assigned a room, the family will be entered into our system and be able to check in at the kiosks. Returning families will check in using their 10-digit phone number. Each child and parent will receive a nametag. No adult will be allowed to enter the preschool area without the proper nametag. Additionally you will receive a security card for each child (birth-Kinder). These are to be kept until the end of the session and given to the class teacher upon retrieving the child .

Can I go into the class with my child to help her feel more comfortable?

To ensure the safety of every child in the First Friends Ministry, the only adults that are allowed in classrooms are approved volunteers. (Volunteers wear designated nametags so they are more easily identified.) We encourage parents to volunteer, however they must be approved to serve before entry in the classroom.

How will I be contacted in the event there are concerns involving my child?

If there is an issue or any concern about your child, we will text you. Please have your cell phone with you and set on vibrate so you can receive messages.

What is the policy for bringing children who are ill?

All children who have had a fever or diarrhea within the past 24 hours or have vomited within the past 24 hours may not enter the First Friends Area. If your child becomes ill while in our care, we will contact you to pick him up. This policy is designed to ensure the well-being of all the children.

What if my child has nut allergies?

The First Friends Area is a nut free zone. We do not allow nuts, nut butters, or any product containing them in the classrooms or the First Friends Area.

Does the church have a Mother's Day Out program?

First Friends Lingo

Here are a few terms that you may want to be aware of to better understand our ministry.

FFEL — First Friends Early Learning is a year-round Mother’s Day Out style program provided to meet the needs of the mothers and fathers of our church and our surrounding communities, emphasizing language development and a Bible-based curriculum. Art, exercise, music, cooking and nature experiences are offered each session.

First Friends — First Friends is the Preschool & Kindergarten Ministry at Houston’s First. We recognize that the preschool years are filled with astounding growth and rapid development. We also recognize that this development was created by God. We know that children between birth and six years learn over half of all they will learn in life during these formative years. This is a critical time of foundation building for all that will follow.

Fitness Childcare — Fitness and Recreation Childcare is free for parents who want to take fitness classes at HFBC. It is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:15-11:15a located in the First Friends Area.

Heart 2 Heart — A program where volunteers serve, one Sunday per month, in the Preschool-Kindergarten department.

Heartland — This is a time where children will sing songs, participate in activities, and hear a Bible story that relates to the importance of worship. We want worship to be a positive experience for them.

High 5 — High 5 is a kids’ music program for PreK-5th graders. Leaders look for as many ways as possible to teach High 5 kids various ways to worship the Lord with all their “heart, mind, soul and strength” while having a great time. Several times each year, High 5 participates in Sunday worship services.

LBS — Age-appropriate Life Bible Study is available on Sundays at 9:15a, 10:45a, 5p and 6:30p for children birth through kindergarten. Sunday provides one of the best times for preschoolers and kindergartners to learn and interact with other children their age.

Milestones — Milestones are classes geared for parents as they disciple their sons and daughters during di erent stages of their lives.

Mission FriendsMission Friends is a Wednesday night class that focuses on missionaries around the world and gives children the opportunity to learn about people of other cultures. Birth-3 year olds are in class from 6-8p. Pre-K and Kindergarteners are in class from 7-8p.

Wee Praise — Wee Praise is a rotation during Mission Friends on Wednesday nights for babies and 1-year-olds. It introduces praise and worship to the very youngest preschoolers.

W.O.W. Choir — W.O.W. Choir is a rotation during Mission Friends on Wednesday nights that allows 2 and 3-year-olds to make a joyful noise to the Lord. Through movement and simple praise songs, these preschoolers learn how to worship.
